Since September 2025 we’ve been publishing a Top 5 of the best photographs uploaded to the iNaturalist platform. The Top 5 includes only photos taken in our beloved country, Honduras.
To qualify for eligibility in the Top 5, photographs must meet specific eligibility criteria.
These include: being taken in Honduras within the period between the 25th of the previous month and the 25th of the current month, and representing different taxa among the selected photographs. In addition, the aesthetic and technical quality of each image will be evaluated, among other factors.
For a detailed explanation of the evaluation and selection criteria for the Top 5 winners, please refer to the contest’s official document, currently in Spanish.
Green iguana (Iguana iguana)

Observed by djscho in the surroundings of Santa Cruz de Yojoa. This reptile, was photographed from the tip of its head to the end of its tail in a perfectly symmetrical shot. Looks like iguana are back this month—should we ban them next time?
Thread-waisted wasp (Sphex habenus)

At first glance, it may seem like just a wasp, but if you look closely, you’ll notice it’s perched on top of another insect—did you catch that? What a great shot by david_argueta046 from San Antonio de Oriente.
Spanish moss, air plants and tilandsias (Tillandsia)

For plant lovers, and especially those fond of tillandsias, amayen captured this photo with a darker tone.
Stalked puffball (Calostoma cinnabarinum)

From Joya Grande, Francisco Morazán, jassihel_cardona managed to photograph this beautiful fungus.
Whale shark (Rhincodon typus)

For October, the winner is kennedyhanson, who photographed this magnificent specimen at our beloved Bay Islands.
